There are approximately 120 species of plants in our botanical garden. Some examples of typical plants used for Chinese herbal medicine are licorice, peony, moutan, Angelica acutiloba, cork tree, turmeric,Coptis japonica, and ginger. Fruit trees include mandarin orange (Citrus unshiu), apricot, bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), and jujube (Ziziphus jujuba). Meadow sage, apple mint, rosemary, and yarrow are herbs grown in the garden. |
Digitalis purpurea |
Digitalis purpurea (left) Digitalis purpurea is commonly called foxglove. This includes cardiac glycosides such as digitoxin or digoxin, which inhibit sodium-potassium ATPase. This results in an increase in intracellular concentration of sodium, which in turn increases intracellular calcium by decreasing the action of the sodium-calcium exchanger in the sarcolemma. Increased intracellular calcium enhances cardiac contractility, which is useful for heart rate control, particularly in the case of irregular atrial fibrillation.
Dianthus (Dianthus superbus, below, center) Dianthus is our school flower. Dianthus is called “Yamato Nadeshiko” in Japanese, which is also a eulogistic name for Japanese women. The Japanese national women’s soccer team is called Nadeshiko Japan.
